2013 Coliseum Block Cabernet Sauvignon 3 pack ($525)
Tucked into the steep hills of Soda Canyon, Henry Hossfeld planted this breathtaking vineyard over thirty years ago – using dynamite as his shovel, he developed this steep, rocky terrain one vine at a time. The density and weight of this wine merits nearly three years in barrel, and a year in the bottle, here at Arkenstone before release.
In the glass, the onyx body, with a deep ruby rim, gives you a hint of the depth to follow. Aromatics of ground espresso bean, candied blackberry, rich cocoa and tobacco aromatics along with the floral notes of cherry blossom and violet; invite you further into this beauty. Dried black cherries, unsweetened dark chocolate, baking spices, wet dirt, and slate make way for blueberries, caramelized sugar, rich mocha and a trace of soft white pepper. The long, satisfying finish leaves essences of blackberry and raspberry alongside toasted marshmallows and dried tobacco. With lush, integrated tannins as well as voluptuous fruit, this wine is well structured with beautiful balance. Although enjoyable right now, this wine is still a baby and will benefit from cellaring.
